In the 14 years I’ve been feeding a raw diet to the dogs, I’ve almost never had to brush the dogs’ teeth because chewing on meaty bones tends to keep the tartar off.   However, I noticed recently that the boys have more tartar than I’d like on their premolars.   My vet recommended CET Oral Hygiene Rinse 8 Ounce.   (<- That’s a link to Amazon, which is a heck of a lot cheaper than the one I bought at the vet’s office).   (BTW, my vet’s typical recommendation for clean teeth is a raw diet combined with the oral rinse when necessary.)

Since I wanted the tartar off faster, I also purchased the CET Enzymatic Poultry Toothpaste and a toothbrush (but was smarter and bought it on-line).

After 1.5 weeks of rinsing and brushing Ronan’s teeth once almost every day, the tartar is more than half gone.   I just do a cursory brushing since it’s not easy to maneuver around the tongue and teeth.   After the tartar is gone, I may stop the brushing and just use the oral rinse occasionally.  We’ll see how it goes.   Ronan loves getting his teeth rinsed and brushed.   Next is Thistle’s turn– we’ll see how he likes it.

Incidentally, I tasted the oral rinse and can’t say it’s that pleasant tasting, but it isn’t too bad.  The dogs don’t seem to mind it.  I did not taste the poultry flavored toothpaste… yet.   😛

We won, we won!

What did we win?  Well, even though I never win anything, I entered a giveaway on Gina Spadafori’s Pet Connection blog post about Nina Ottosson’s dog brain game toys.   I’d never purchased these toys before this year, mostly because they are pricey and I was afraid the dogs would tire of it.   Then Miche loaned her wood games to us (the wooden Dog Domino and the wooden Dogfighter), and though the dogs LOVED it, I was afraid they would destroy her dog’s toys with their enthusiastic maneuvers so they only played once and no more!  I ended up buying them their own, the plastic DogTornado.

Now we also own the plastic DogBrick.  Many thanks to Gina, her famous dog McKenzie, and Nina!

Here is Thistle examining the box…

Here’s a video of Ronan’s turn.

The Tigana pack (young and old) give Nina Ottosson toys a definite thumbs up.  🙂

Exercise pen

A short ex-pen like this would be handy when going to training, if the dog understands they are not allowed to jump out.  Precision Pet Ultimate Exercise Pen

My new favorite leash

I am leash-obsessed. I have a variety of leashes, but yesterday I bought this leash from DoggoneGood.com, in the regular size, not heavyweight (the picture shows a heavyweight thick leash).   It’s attractive, lightweight, and comfortable on my hands.   I also bought the two-dog leash (same brand), and right now am eyeing the adjustable handle leash (also the same brand) since I like to use a hands-free leash when jogging.   I’ve been using Mendota brand leashes (with the clip) for years but they are all wearing out.  My other favorite leash is a beautiful braided soft rope leash made by  Lisa Bradford of Dream Dog Designs, but she doesn’t make them regularly since the material is difficult to find.
